Dance: Improving Your Life Essay

Dance is beneficial to the mind and body in numerous ways. The act of dancing is also looked upon as a recreational activity, which although it is, also has additional benefits for both short and long-term effects. Physical and mental effects, impact on adolescents, as well as the importance of movement therapy all play a major part in determining what dancing can do for someone in all aspects of a person’s life.
Dancing keeps your body active, just like any other sport or exercise would do. With dance, comes strengthened muscles and muscle memory. These, teaching techniques and rhythm in such a way that allow one to better how they move from day to day. Dancing also helps with weight loss by burning calories.
Dance makes an easy way of weight loss and control. Most effects are positive on one’s body. “Done at a moderate or higher tempo, it usually causes a sweat and qualifies as aerobic exercise. Dancing burns calories and can positively affect weight loss” (Holt). By using dance as an aerobic exercise method, the human body is offered cardiovascular conditioning which can help lower the risk of coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and contribute to weight loss. In addition, Livestrong statistics show that in one hour of dancing to a high-rhythm style, you can burn up to as much as 500 calories.
The human body is a tool of expression. Dancing allows all muscles to be strengthened in just a series of simple movements. “In ballet, an attitude refers to a specific pose, not the way you act. According to the American Ballet Theater, attitudes were inspired by Giovanni da Bologna’s statue of the Roman god Mercury. In the statue, Mercury has one leg in the air behind him bent at a 90-degree angle. In ballet, an attitude is similar, but dancers lift their free leg as high as possible and my balance on the toe of their standing leg. Dance is my favorite sport

Ever since I was a little girl dance has always been my favorite sport. When I was three, I would put glitter on my face and run around the house twirling. Dance is and has always been my passion. Maybe it’s the control of the dancer’s body to execute each move flawlessly that enraptures me? Or it could be the look on the dancers’ face that says they’re loving what they’re doing? Either way I absolutely love dance. It brings such joy to so many people, both the person dancing and the people watching.

Some people may disagree and say “dance is not a sport!” But I say it is. Sports require pushing your physical body to reach it’s maximum performance level. Just as body-builders mush exercise and prepare their bodies, dancers must also. Body-builders and muscle-men have large, bulky, and strong muscles because of the foods they eat and the work-outs they do; dancers have long, lean, and strong muscles because they do different work-outs than body-builders.

Dance is great! However it still has some issues that come with it. It costs a lot of money to get good training, you may acquire a lot of injuries due to mistakes or improper stretching, and it is A LOT of work just to be good at it. Even though it is a lot of work with a lot of risks, I believe that its’ good outweighs the bad. You learn life lessons from dance class and from your dance teacher.

Dance has helped me in a lot of areas; I am very athletic, strong, and I have high self esteem. I am encouraged now more than ever to try my best in class, at competitions, and in life in general. I remember the day I bought my first pair of Pointe shoes. They were so perfect and pretty. I can still see my face lit up with joy. Every time I go to dance class I’m taken back to that moment where nothing else mattered but mastering the art of ballet.

So in conclusion, dance is a perfect example of everything I want to be when I’m older: Strong, beautiful, hopeful, and absolutely perfect. I know I’m not completely those things now, but I can strive to become them as I get older. And that is why dance is my favorite sport.
